Camp Stuff.

I was not in Berea today, I had to actually go to work. :(

News of the day included a minor injury to Braylon. Evidently, it’s an ankle tweek – no big deal but according to Mary K, his playing time may be limited on Saturday. I’m sure it would have been anyway.

Still no declared starter at QB for the first preseason game. I expect Quinn to start but wouldn’t be surprised if DA gets the nod. I am curious to see how long the 1st team will play. Considering the way camp has gone and the rotation in last week’s scrimmage, we may see multiple series for both QB’s against Green Bay. I hope that’s the case.

In the gate, sitting on the 50 yard line.

Braylon out early.

Dawson first dressed in game gear. Just made a 65 yarder!

Looking forward to seeing James Davis run today. Excited to watch the new look defense.

DA taking snaps from Mack today. James Davis also on Brown team.

Random Brown team guys: Braylon, Royal, Massaquoi, Adams, Hubbard, Williams, Veikune.

White team: Quinn, Cribbs, Wright, Poole, Robiskie, Elam, Harrison.

1st Q highs: BQ complete 55 yd TD to Leggett on his first snap.

DA struggles in first two drives. Impressive in 3rd drive, but picked in the red zone by Jackson.

Solid quarter by Massaquoi who had 3 nice grabs.

2nd Q: Shawn Rogers is a monster. No scoring.

3rd Q: Ratliff hooks up with Patten for a 70 yard TD. Lawson in coverage.

Next drive, Ratliff hits Patten again who toasted McDonald on a iso post. The play goes for 65 yards down to the 4. DA finishes drive with a 6 yard scramble and dive into the endzone.

4 Q: Not much action. Dawson misses 50 yd FG will :30 left to give Brown team a 17-14 victory.

Saturday update from Berea. Shaun Smith is gone.

Posted under Media, Staff Report, Training Camp by admin on Saturday 8 August 2009 at 7:49 pm

I could see it coming. On more than one occasion I witnessed Browns DL coach Brian Cox tell Shaun Smith to pick it up and quit walking. In one of the videos I’ve posted on this site you witness such an exchange. The jovial Smith simply tells Cox it’s his “fatboy trot”. Well, Shaun isn’t laughing now. Today the Browns announced that they have cut ties with the outspoken linemen. Coach Mangini went on the Browns 2nd year DL Ahtyba Rubin for his work ethic and consistency. Sounds like he’s odds of favorite to move up the depth chart at this point.

Saturday brought the 2nd major injury of camp when WR Syndric Steptoe was carted off with an apparent shoulder/arm injury. Considering that we’re still awaiting word on the seriousness of the Hadnot injury, which occurred days ago, I don’t see any solid info on Steptoe in the near future.

Tomorrow should be a lot of fun when the team scrimmages at the stadium. I am anxious to see guys who have shown glimpses in practice perform in a game situation. Guys like James Davis, Paul Hubbard, and the rookie WR’s.

I will be updating live from the scrimmage tomorrow. Check it out.

Friday at camp.

Posted under Staff Report, Training Camp by admin on Friday 7 August 2009 at 7:23 am

Players just making their way onto practice field. Stand by for updates.

Corey Ivy is the only member of the defense outside. He’s been out for 10 minutes.

Anderson with 1st team to start this morning.

Shorts with pads today; limited contact.

WOW. Mack gets blown up twice in 1 on 1 drill.

Shawn Rogers dominates against single and double coverage in same drill.

Drops today by Braylon, Hubbard, and Steptoe. Ball dropped to Edwards thrown slightly behind him by BQ.

Alex Mack bull rushes Madsen and puts him flat on his back. Very impressive.

Both QB’s struggle in 11 on 11 drill. Nothing completed downfield.

James Davis with a pretty run after the catch.

DA fails to score in 2 minute drill. Not even close. On 4th and 11 he throws a 5 yard incomplete pass to Harrison. ????

BQ fails to score in 2 minutes drill.

Dawson misses back to back FG attempts, although they are both from 45+ yards.

Browns waive Don Carey.

Well, that was quick.

Three months after taking Carey in the sixth round of the draft, he has been cut by Eric Mangini. Carey was not seen in Berea during the past few days which is odd considering the injured players usually spend the day working with trainers adjacent to team activity.

Don Carey was raised a Steelers fan, so I’m not sure the kid ever had a chance. I wish him luck.

Camp Observations

Posted under Staff Report, Training Camp by admin on Thursday 6 August 2009 at 12:52 pm

Place is packed for a weekday. Very nice crowd. Bad for me and my efforts to take pictures.

Only one guy on the bike today – Patten.

Edwards catching everything again today.

Wright tweeked a hammy during drills early on and required some stretching with trainer.

Coach Ryan is watchind D drills. Never too far from his son.

David Patten is doing pull ups on the goal post. That’s a first.

Dawson kicking from 55 yards and pretty accurate.

Brady just picked by Poole on a ball thrown behind Edwards.

DLine stuffing the run on consecutive plays.

First team under Quinn struggled.

Good penetration by Williams to stop Harrison on a pitch.

James Davis cuts back and takes it to the house. Very nice run.

DA looks pretty good overall. Nothing deep attempted.

Hadnot down. Everything halted. Here comes the cart.

Both QB’s struggled through 7-7, but DA looked better than Quinn. Both guys completed passes to RB and TE, but nothing in the seem or deep.

Steve Heiden stripped during 11-11 drills and D recovers fumble.

3rd and 10 drill: Quinn incomplete, Dawson misses FG attempt. Anderson completes ball in seem. Drill ends.

End for me today.

Braylon is back.

Posted under Staff Report, Training Camp by admin on Wednesday 5 August 2009 at 7:30 pm

Good deal, no more drama. Braylon is in pads and catching balls. He practiced for the first time today and evidently had a pretty good showing. He was even upbeat for reporters after practice. This is all good news. Now we can focus on football as the preseason approaches.

I’ll be back in Berea tomorrow morning and will get a good look at #17.
